HONOLULU – Ask him about regrets in his life, and Kobe Bryant will give an answer befitting
someone professing to be more mature.
"What happened makes you the person you are now," Bryant said.

The furthest he has been from 2-inch-high tabloid headlines in recent memory, Bryant is talking
about being "comfortable with this life." And in a sense, basketball has become less important to him.

"I'm at a point now where I feel like I don't want to leave the Earth and feel like I haven't made
a significant impact on people in a positive way besides just putting the ball in the basket," said
Bryant, 27. "I want to feel like life has some type of purpose to it."

Primarily, that is about raising his daughter, Natalia, who is approaching 3 years old. It is also
about doing public service through his fame - fame that two years ago here in Hawaii was notoriety and,
at the height of the buzz over his sexual-assault charge, he said he wanted to wish away.
With his legal standing, if not his reputation, cleared and so many spats with Shaquille O'Neal and
Phil Jackson in the past, Bryant begins this Lakers season feeling fresh.

The Lakers played their first exhibition game late Tuesday night against Golden State. Two years ago,
Bryant missed this opener because he was on an early flight back to tend to his assault case.
But what he remembers is how his first NBA training camp was in Honolulu and how he was playing small
forward then, as he often is today. He said this 10th NBA season "feels like it's Year One for me in
a way. It's a rebirth."

A week into training camp, the Lakers have a better understanding of what Bryant means by that.

So far he has been more relaxed off the court, chatting about Natalia's uncanny accuracy when flipping
chips around on poker nights at Bryant's home or complaining about his Pomeranian dogs Gucci ("100 percent
untrainable," Bryant said) and Gio (nicknamed "Focker" because of his misbehavior).

Bryant has been riding in the team bus, not a private car with his security detail as he did last time here.
And unlike last season, he has tried to divest himself of his unofficial status as a supervisor. Bryant
declined to single anyone out Monday when asked which players have impressed him this camp. A year ago, Bryant
offered plenty of opinions to the same question.

lavish with his praise: "His strength is really to get everybody on the same page, to play as one. He's
masterful at doing that. We're just going to follow his lead." And Bryant has been direct in his subordination:
"He's the coach. I'm the player."

Bryant the player, as Jackson predicted, appears intent to re-establish himself as the best player there is.
This is how Bryant described his mindset coming out of the summer: "I just got back to basics - that dream of
being a kid and wanting to play in the NBA and play for my favorite team, the Lakers. It's that passion; that
passion was there. It's an opportunity just to get back to the game, you know?"

So in another sense, basketball has become more important again.

The Lakers hope that helps Bryant improve as a leader and teammate. For him to do so, he has to become better
at sharing his determination with teammates - especially the next-best players: Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown, who
have bigger bodies but more delicate psyches.

Jackson notices that old Bryant drive, first and foremost: "I just think he's a very determined player and he's
very dedicated to what he's doing."

But Jackson has also seen a greater tolerance.

Overall, last season provided mostly opportunities for more regret. But Bryant isn't indulging that either,
even if all that losing is now part of him.

was very difficult to go through. So that gives us an inner toughness."
